The Dynamite and Its Effect On The Fishermen

According to the assistant director of the government's Fisheries Resource Protection department Baraka Mngulwi, the dynamite is either created from scratch at home, or stolen from mines and roadside demolitions. As the dynamite used is often second hand and cheap, the fishermen can never really estimate the time it will take to detonate the charge. Sometimes it is up to ten seconds, however it can detonate in a couple of seconds as well. Many fishermen have lost limbs, hands, arms, legs, and have even died due to the blast. Anyone who is caught blast fishing will be sentenced to jail for 5 years and an extra 12 months for having possession of explosives. However, it is very hard to track down the fisherman and so most cases are turned down. It is not only the fishermens lives being effcted, the families of fishermen suffer the consequences of not seeing their husbands and fathers for the illegal acts they have commited.
